Kybella
Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a prescription medication approved for use in adults (18 years or older) to help improve the appearance of fat below the chin (submental area). Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule within the body that helps to break down fat; Kybella is a synthetic form of deoxycholic acid.
Diet and exercise alone may not be able to help improve submental fullness which can be caused by weight gain, genetics and the aging process. However, you don’t necessarily need to be overweight to have submental fullness.
Kybella is injected in the area under the chin to permanently destroy fat cells and improve the chin profile. The injection process takes about 15-20 minutes. Once Kybella is injected, your body’s metabolism works to naturally process and clear the destroyed fat cells from the treatment area. After the fat cells are gone, you’re left with a visible reduction in submental fullness.
The amount injected and the number of injections recommended (up to 6 treatments) varies from patient to patient. Treatments are scheduled at least 1 month apart to allow your body time to process and clear the fat cells destroyed from the treatment area. Common side effects of Kybella, which are typically temporary and often resolve on their own, are: swelling, bruising, tenderness, numbness and redness.
